ULCERS AND BOVINE COLOSTRUM: The Science and Testimonials

Ulcers and Bovine Colostrum

Colostrum is a special substance secreted by the mammary glands of all mammals near the time of birthing. It was designed by nature to promote health, strength, and vitality in the newborn. If you breastfed colostrum was your first meal. Colostrum contains a multitude of healthful components that work for adults as well as the newborn. Colostrum for human use is harvested from dairy cattle, after the calves have been given an amount adequate for their needs.

Not long ago, the common belief was that peptic ulcers were a result of lifestyle. A great deal has changed. Doctors now know that a bacterial infection or medications, not stress or diet, cause most ulcers of the stomach and upper part of the small intestine. Most ulcers of the esophagus are associated with the reflux of stomach acid.

Bovine Colostrum has an Array of Immune Enhancing  and Healing Components

Colostrum provides protection against pathogens and is vital to the survival of newborns. Colostrum works for adults as well, fortifying the immune system and regulating the immune response. The use of Synertek colostrum has been shown to raise serum immune factors in humans by 50%. Clinical Research

The Science:

"Most ulcers are caused by the bacteria Helicobacter Pylori (H. pylori). Many researchers have shown the benefits of bovine colostrum for ulcers caused by H. pylori. They show that bovine colostrum can block the binding of Helicobacter species to the lining of the stomach and intestinal tract and therefore inhibit infection." (Bitzan, Falk, Hamosh, Wada) "The risk of Diabetes (IDDM), H. pylori-related ulcers, Crohn's disease, and atopic disease is lower in individuals who were breastfed during infancy. These same protective factors apply to supplemental colostrum for adults and children." (Beth Ley, PhD, COLOSTRUM: Nature’s Gift to the Immune System

"Several colostrum components stimulate wound healing. Nucleotides, EgF, TgF, and IgF-1 stimulate skin growth and cellular growth and repair by direct action on DNA and RNA. These growth factors facilitate the healing of tissues damaged by ulcers, trauma, burns, surgery, or inflammatory disease. Colostrum's wound-healing properties specifically benefit the skin, muscle, cartilage, bone, and nerve cells."  --Zoltan Rona, M.D., The American Journal of Natural Medicine, Mar. 1998.

"Colostrum contains leukocytes, lactoferrin, lysozyme, and all of the immunoglobulins: IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, and IgM. These components together combat bacteria, viruses, and yeast. Colostrum contains cytokines, lymphokines, and proline-rich polypeptides. These components work together to initiate the immune response, and regulate the intensity and duration of it... Without optimal immune protection we are susceptible to conditions ranging from the common cold, the flu, various stages of immune deficiency, cancer and even AIDS." (Beth Ley, PhD, COLOSTRUM: Nature’s Gift to the Immune System

"Bovine colostrum is biologically transferable to all mammals, including humans. It is much higher in immune factors than human mother’s colostrum. Laboratory analyses of immune and growth factors from bovine colostrum are identical to those found in human colostrum, except that the levels of these factors are significantly higher in the bovine version... Immunoglobulins (A, D, E, G, and M) are the most abundant of the immune factors found in colostrum. IgG neutralizes toxins and microbes in the lymph and circulatory system. IgM destroys bacteria, while IgE and EgD are highly antiviral." (Dr. Zoltan Rona, American Journal of Natural Medicine)

"PRP, in bovine colostrum, has the same ability to regulate activity of the immune system as (do the) hormones of the thymus gland. It activates an underactive immune system, helping it move into action against disease-causing organisms." (Drs. Staroscik et. Al., Molecular Immunology)

"Immune factors in cow colostrum, when taken orally, are effective against disease-causing organisms in the intestinal tract. Ingestion of bovine colostrum’s immuoglobulins may be a new method of providing passive immunoprotection against a host of gut-associated disease-causing antigens (viral and bacterial)."
(Dr. R. McClead, et al., Pediatrics Research)

"Following birth, the infant gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, stomach and small intestine) undergoes profound growth, changes and functional maturation. These changes are apparently related to the onset of colostrum ingestion... This is due to the hormones and growth-promoting peptides, such as insulin, cortisol, epidermal growth factor (EGF) and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) found at high concentrations in maternal colostrum... Transforming Growth Factors (found in colostrum) are polypeptides which promote cell proliferation, tissue repair and maintenance (wound healing) and embryonic development. Dr. F.J. Ballard, et al, found bovine colostrum contained up to 100 times the mitogenic potency of human colostrum." --Beth Ley, PhD, Colostrum, Nature's Gift to the Immune System

"Recent studies suggest that colostral fractions, or individual peptides present in colostrum, might be useful for the treatment of a wide variety of gastrointestinal conditions..." --Bovine Colostrum and Healing in the Gastrointestinal Tract, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 72, No. 1, 5-14, July 2000
